Since its inception in 2000, Woodlands North has grown to build its business around the forest industry. Woodlands North is involved in a diverse range of forestry projects from landscape level inventory, operational scale silviculture to a wide variety of ecological based applications.
The Woodlands North Geospatial Team provides a wide variety of services to its clients. This includes creative and customized Geographic Information Systems (GIS) solutions using current technology, open-sourced systems, and mobile technologies.
Our experience in database management and spatial planning, while being cognisant of field data collection needs and requirements, allows us to understand projects holistically with an end goal in mind.
Woodlands North has provided a wide variety of ecological services to meet the needs of our energy sector clients. We have conducted plant and wildlife inventory programs, ecological land classification projects and large scale monitoring programs targeting the recovery of species-at-risk.
Woodlands North offers regulatory requirements services which includes conducting environmental site assessments, detailed site assessments, biophysical and pre-disturbance assessments, Alberta One Call notifications, timber damage and management, temporary field authorization and disposition operational approvals, and completion of reclamation certificate applications to the Alberta Energy Regulator.
Woodlands North is dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of the boreal forest. While new management practices will serve to reduce the footprint and effect of resource development on wildlife communities, many historical and legacy activities require intensive intervention to help them recover. Our team is one of the most experienced in the province in linear, riparian and watercourse restoration, we have all of the tools and experience in planning and implementation to make any restoration program a success.
Under provincial regulations, our energy sector clients are often required to take inventory of the infrastructure and lands under their stewardship. Woodlands North has completed a number of inventories for the energy sector assessing roads, stream crossings, and aquatic resources. As part of this process Woodlands North has created decision support tools to aid in prioritizing where companies invest their resources.
Woodlands North conducts a full suite of reclamation practices on clean sites throughout the province on both crown and private land. Our specialty is growing trees and the majority of our work is in the boreal forest working with the wetland and forested reclamation criteria. Our crews are skilled reclamation problem solving to help a client divest a reclaimed site as soon as possible, we are able to complete any reclamation tasks from planning, permitting, implementation and regulatory submissions.
CREEKS + CROSSING
Watercourse crossings may be the single largest point source of impact on the boreal forests surface water. By improving best practices, decision makers can focus on repair and maintenance. Woodlands North offers complete solutions to roadway watercourse crossings from inventory and assessment, hydrological modeling, repairs and replacement to complete watershed restoration planning.
Woodlands North offers forest management services to tenure holders, privately owned companies, and the provincial government. We provide ecological land classifications, soil classifications, rare plant and wildlife inventories, as well as predictive ecosystem and ecosite modeling.
Forestry roads are the foundation of the infrastructure that permits resource transport. Properly planned, located and constructed roads are key for success. Also important is the proper planning, location, and installation of watercourse crossings. Woodlands North provides complete solutions to watercourse crossing issues from planning and regulatory permitting to complete restoration or repair.
Woodlands North has experience conducting and supervising large silviculture programs. We can assist with seed and seedling ordering, site preparation planning, pile burning, planting supervision and quality checks, aerial and ground herbicide applications, and performance surveys. We also complete pre-commercial thinning and pre-harvest quality assessments to assist client planning.
Obtaining a reclamation certificate for dispositions or other tenures is vital for risk management. While reforestation can play a large role in the reclamation of a disturbed site there are many additional components to consider through planning, decommission, and regulation. Woodlands North offers a full range of forested land reclamation services from vegetation management to permitting.
Woodlands North has been completing inventory work for the forest sector, the energy industry, and the provincial government for seventeen years. Our crews tally tens of thousands of trees annually for our clients and complete work in all aspects of forest mensuration programs from design, implementation, field measurements, data entry and analysis. Growth and yield field and data management techniques have changed over time and Woodlands has kept up to this change developing mobile data collection applications and using static LiDAR and UAV imagery to conduct survey work.
Our Geospatial team uses a variety of statistical tools and analytic approaches to conduct hydrological, risk assessment, and surface modeling. A number of algorithms have been created.
3D DATA CAPTURE
Woodlands North uses 3D scanners such as the FARO Focus X330 to capture and document data in high resolution. Our Innovation Team is working to integrate drones into the process of 3D documentation as well.
Drones provide an efficient means of reconnaissance, project planning and data capture. Data collected via drones is processed to produce high resolution ortho-mosaics and surface models.
One of our areas of expertise includes building Spatial Decision Support Systems(DSS). Woodlands North integrates multiple variable and multiple data sources to deliver dynamic solutions.
Digital Elevation Models (DEM) derived from LiDAR data are used in conjunction with statistical tools such as Proximity, Correlation, and Density to conduct detailed hydrological analyses. The outputs are used for flood and flow analysis to determine recommended Q50 culvert sizing.
Our experience in 3D modeling allows Woodlands North to produce high resolution 3D pdfs and videos for project overview and visualization.
Woodlands North provides complete mapping solutions from large scale planning to geographical pdfs used for field orientation and data collection which includes web mapping solutions.

Woodlands North provides efficient data collection using customized mobile applications. We have produced apps for mobile devices such as Juno3 Series, which focus on spatial accuracy and completeness.
Woodlands North web mapping solutions add efficiency to project management. Collected spatial data is automatically synchronized with the web server and access is available to project proponents through the secure web interface.
